Pioneer Needle
car stereo system problem any advice????
i have 2 12" pioneer premeir 3000w peak power and 2 12" rockford fosgates 1000w peak i think. I have them running off a 4000w amp with a 1.5 farad capacitor but i can still watch my battery needle jump up and down and almost shut off my head lights at night what can i do to stop this?
its a 93 ford probe by the way and it seems like my battery is not charging as well any more either.
The amp is 2000w rms the premeirs are 1000w rms and the fosgates are 400w rms
This is a common complaint among stereo enthusiasts, particulary those that run a heavy load on their amplifiers. The first thing to take note of is the capacitor you have in the system. The capacitor is one of the most misunderstood car stereo items available, it's purpose is not to keep your headlights from dimming....you could add a 50 farad cap and still watch your lights dim when hitting hard.
A capacitor is meant to regulate the intensity of power to whatever it's connected to, if the battery "hiccups" you would hear no distortion in your sound. There are many sites on the internet dedicated to explaining how and what a capacitor does.
Your problem specifically can be resolved by beefing up the electrical system in the vehicle. A dry cell battery (Optima) is a great way to get started. If you combine this with a high output alternator expect not only to see bright lights at all times but an overall higher output to your equipment. A good electrical system will put out 14.4V to 14.8V worth of power. I'd imagine you're putting out 12.5V at best with a very low output alternator.
You can expect to pay around $200 - $250 for a good Optima battery and around the same for high output alternator. High output alternators are available all over the internet, unless you drive a really rare ride you should be able to find one. If you have trouble finding it look up your local alternator/starter rebuilder....they can remove yours and beef it up.
