Why Natural Omega3 is the Key to Better Health
You might disagree, but hear me out on this. The natural omega3 sources include flax, canola and olive oils. But, those sources provide only alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. The omegas that are missing from most people’s diets are Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid or DHA and EPA.
A lot has been said about DHA, lately. In particular, researchers have been focusing on how important it is to normal brain development in infants and children.
Unlike other nutrients, which can be found in a variety of different foods, DHA and EPA are found only in fatty fish. That’s hard for some people to believe, but it is true.
The fish get their DHA and EPA by eating smaller fish or by eating certain kinds of marine algae. In order to satisfy the vegan market, some food and supplement manufacturers are now growing DHA-rich marine algae in reactors.
Some of the fortified foods that you see on the market contain the algae extracts. Another option that some farmers use is to feed fish meal or flax seed to chickens. The eggs laid by hens fed those foods contain omega-3 fatty acids.
Natural omega3 fatty acids are present in free-range chickens and their eggs. Some organic dairy products provide the nutrients, as well. It is believed that most foods had a higher nutritional value before the advent of mass production.
But, in order to feed the people of the world, mass production is necessary. Some people simply would not be able to afford to eat, were it not for mass production. So, like many things in the modern-world, it is something of a necessary evil.
Health conscious individuals try to follow the latest recommendations and include more fish in their diets. But, they have to be picky about which species they choose.
Practically all species provide some natural omega3. But, some are more likely to contain contaminants, such as mercury, PCBs and dioxins. According to the Seafood Watch list for consumers, Atlantic Cod, flounder, sole, grouper, halibut and farmed salmon are among the species to avoid completely or eat sparingly.
Alaskan and wild Pacific salmon are among the few species that can be safely eaten on a regular basis, without worrying about contaminants. But, if you have been to a grocery store lately, you know that Pacific salmon is relatively expensive.
A budget-minded family has to stretch their food dollars, as much as possible. Natural omega3 supplements help with that.
Some doctors actually promote the idea of eating salmon every day. But, most suggest that eating a variety of different foods is a better choice, because of all of the different micronutrients that they provide.
For those of us that like variety in our diets and don’t want to spend a fortune on groceries, supplementation makes sense. A good supplement can provide an adult’s minimum daily requirements for total omega-3s.
The minimum daily requirements for DHA and EPA have yet to be established, but some natural omega3 sources provide 560mg of DHA and 240mg of EPA. That’s a good goal to aim for.
