Patch Cable
Are there any advantages or drawbacks to using shielded cable, as opposed to regular patch cable?
I have a lan of 15 computers connected to a gigabit switch which is connected to a router . The router is connected to the cable modem. I ordered 500ft cat 6 sheilded cable instead of the regular cat 6 unshielded. I was wondering if there were any drawbacks to doing this . I ask becaus ethe prices were almost identical.
Shielded will always be better. Both in data cables as well as audio cables. Shielded means that they have placed an extra layer of either plastic or metal around the wiring in order to reject any outside interference. Outside interference being cell phone, tv, radio, microwave signals. This allows better transmission of your data with more accuracy as it gets to the endpoint.

Structured Cabling
As with anything that's established, there are standards that usually must be sticked to. In the case of network wires the choice is yours, or the choice of the individual that's doing the installation. The idea behind Structured Cabling is to create a system that essentially seems sensible, and one that's rather straightforward to use. If you want an example of why this kind of wiring is required, then walk into the standard American home and have a look behind the TV. When you are finished with that, we are going to continue. When it comes to Structured Cabling, there are 6 subsystems that you will need to stress about. These are the Entrace Facilities, The apparatus rooms, telecomms rooms, spine wiring, horizontal wiring, and work-area parts.
Each of these are similarly significant and naturally they have to be set up correctly. The standards are dissimilar for diverse buildings. These standards could change when you're doing an house building, and they could change again when you would like to wire an information center. Bear in mind that to run an effective operation you need to probably use class 5 or class 6 wire, as using anything lower ( including coaxial wire ) would end in disaster for your network. One nice example of Structured Cabling is the process of laying your wire in a star formation. They should all connect at a central point so they may be employed for their intended purpose. They'll routinely end in a rack mounted patch panel where they can be employed for a great number of applications.
For instance they would work best for the standard server, or they may be used for a phone server. But now we come to the faster connections. As an example if you've got a line patched as an information port, then all that you need are patch wires that connect to a PC.
The patch cable and the crossover wire are a couple of the most simple parts of networking, and while they would appear to be perplexing to some of the people, they're 2nd nature to others.
