Panasonic Turntable Motors

What is the little cable from the audio output on Panasonic turntable?
This is a Panasonic RD 3500 turntable from sometime in the 1970s to 1980s. There's a little cable that sits between the regular output audio cable. The little cable has been cut at the end so I don't know what kind of connection it was.
This link is to a photo of the cables on the turntable (on the left is the audio output - you can see that the little black cable sits on the regular audio cable).
This link shows a photo of how the little black cable is cut.
So my question: What is the little cable for? And is it important? I need to know if the audio will work without this cable. The turntable motor works but it needs a new belt and needle/cartridge. I don't want to buy these just to find out the audio won't work without the little cable.
I'm hooking up the turntable to a Panasonic RA-6500 with speakers connected.
The wire is a ground wire that must be connected to a grounding screw on your receiver or separate phono preamp in the event your receiver has no magnetic phono inputs or grounding terminal. Connecting the bare wire is fine.
If your Panasonic RA-6500 is the vintage cassette / receiver I found info on the web for, it does have magnetic phono inputs and a grounding screw and you should be good to go.
There are no moving parts to wear out inside a moving magnet cartridge. Unless the cartridge looks corroded, like it's been exposed to harsh environmental conditions, it's probably fine and all you need is a new stylus.
You can find a new old stock or aftermarket replacement stylus for just about any cartridge. If the cartridge is the original, the stylus you need is available. Although, the cartridge may have been changed somewhere along the way. In this case, you'd have to try to identify it and find what replacement stylus it takes. The cartridge model numbers were often on the top of the cartridge and you might have to remove the cartridge from the headshell to identify it. Replacing the stylus instead of the whole cartridge is usually the best way to go because many of the older cartridges sounded better than anything you can buy now for much more money.
This is the stylus you need if the cartridge is the original. The elliptical upgrade stylus shown on the right would be worth the extra money if you have it to spend. Smoother sound and more extended frequency response...

You should have no problem finding a belt with a Google search.
Good luck! Keep 'em spinnin'!
