Wooden Lazy Susan Like Granny's
One of my good childhood memories is of Granny baking muffins and setting them out for us on a lazy susan turntable that she kept on the kitchen table. It was dark walnut in color, and the thought of it always warmed my heart. I decided that I was going to bring back that good feeling of my childhood and get a lazy susan to add to my kitchen. I was determined to find one just like Granny used to have.
This was not at all easy to accomplish. Granny's wooden Lazy Susan was not only dark walnut in color, but it also had the most delicate flowers carved on the edges. It also came with a matching hors d'oeuvres tray and a cutting board. I felt like my newly-renovated kitchen would not be complete if I could not find, if not the same, then at least a set as elegant as Granny's.
At first, I tried to look in our local kitchenware store. I found nothing even remotely similar. I did find some, but mostly they were glass or plastic, nothing worthy of my attention. Someone told me that there was a large warehouse close by that had a large selection of wooden Lazy Susans, so me and my friend headed out there one weekend. Once again, the store let me down. The warehouse had quite a lot of wooden Lazy Susans but hey were mostly just plain oak. No decorations, and certainly not matched in any set of any sort. This trip made me think that there are no more beautiful, well-crafted wooden Lazy Susans to be had.
So I went to all the antique shops I could find, attended different yard sales and garage sales but no luck! I began to think that the artist that crafted my grandmother's wooden Lazy Susan had no modern counterpart in our times; maybe he was even the 'Leonardo Da Vinci of wooden Lazy Susans.' My friend had given up on this wild goose chase, and he told me that maybe this whole thing was not just about perfecting my newly decorating kitchen. He felt that I was chasing after the comforts of my childhood, and everything that my grandmother stood for. "Perhaps you're subconsciously refusing to grow up." He said. I asserted to him that this was not me hanging on to my childhood and refusing to step into adulthood. It was just about buying a wooden Lazy Susan!! To show him, I decided to give up and forget about the whole thing. Yet, secretly that night, I crept out of bed and surfed the web looking for a wooden Lazy Susan that looked just like my Granny's.
