Door knobs holes drilled too high, need idea how to fix?
We had a handyman put in french doors. He drilled the door knob hole too high!! It's not at the standard 36" height and it looks terrible!! How do we fix? He is refunding our money and we don't want him to do work again. I was thinking of some type of plate under the new knob that would cover the hole. Any ideas? or websites that would help us?
He put the door knob holes right smack in the middle of the door
It's a french painted white wood door
Measure the diameter of the wrong hole size. Get a hole saw with the mandrel and drill a hole in a 2" x 4" saving the plug. The 2" x 4" is
1+1/2" thick. If your door is 1+3/4" thick or 1+3/8" thick the plug will work fine. If the plug is thinner than the door, just center the plug in the door and apply glue around the perimeter. Use popsicle sticks, toothpicks to shim around the plug if it's a little loose in the hole.
Let glue sit over night. If plug is too thick, go ahead and glue it in, when glue dries use a belt sander to sand it down flush with the door.
Use spackling compound to fill in the plug cracks around the edge - let it dry then sand with palm sander or hand sand using a wood block with sandpaper wrapped around it. Keep putting more drywall compound in as it shrinks a little. When you have it very smooth on both sides, put some primer on the patch and let it dry. Now repaint the door.
It takes several steps to get it right, so take your time. I have heard of carpenters making a mistake and measuring for the knob from the top of the door down instead of from the bottom of the door up.
