Re-use of insulin syringes?

MEDICAL PROS ANSWER PLEASE.

Yes, I understand septic issues and the necessity for antiseptic precautions.

Assuming:
1) no more than 2 or 3 uses of an insulin syringe on the same patient
2) cleaning the used needle with alcohol, capping it and using it one day later after again cleaning w/alcohol
3) disposing after 2nd or 3rd use

Since these are sub-cutaneous injections done on the same patient; And since antiseptic procedures I'm describing are similar to what was done in years past when disposable syringes were not the norm, is there a SERIOUS and REALISTIC probability of infection? Logic and exposure to antiseptic procedures lead me to believe it might be worthwhile (and relatively safe) to re-use a syringe once or twice.

This question is necessitated by the current economic crisis for many of us.

Go for it. There is nothing wrong wit this practice. 90% alcohol is the alcohol to use. Granted the needle will finally get dull but you will know when to change by the discomfort.

Reuse and Disposable Syringes
When disposable syringes were first introduced,
most users fully embraced the concept of singleuse
disposable syringes and used them once as
intended. Others used the disposable syringes,
but did not use them only once. “It is wasteful
to throw away a perfectly good syringe after
one use” they may have reasoned. These
patients used their disposable syringes multiple
times, and may have made up their own regimen
to care for the syringes between uses; some
continuing to soak them in alcohol between
uses or wiping them with alcohol and others
storing them in the refrigerator.
Consequently, there was and still is awareness
by professionals that some patients reuse disposable
syringes. Despite syringe labels that
advise single-use only, this perception appears
to have resulted in health care professionals
developing occasional “unofficial” guidelines
ranging from “use each syringe for no more
than one or two days” to “use a syringe until it
is no longer comfortable.” Other cautions may
have included directions not to soak the needles
in alcohol or wipe them with alcohol between
uses (to avoid making the needles less comfortable
by removing the lubricant).
Although one might imagine that patients who
reused syringes would get infections at the
injection site from using non-sterile needles, in
fact infections were reported infrequently.
There were studies documenting that pain
increases with needle reuse, but acceptable pain
level was viewed as a personal matter for the
patient to decide, and not a medical matter as
long as the increased pain didn’t negatively
impact compliance with the prescribed injection
regimen. As a result, some patients may have
been advised that as long as only one person
used the needles, bathed regularly and took all
of the required injections, they could reuse the
syringes.
Today, it is recognized that reuse of insulin needles
is not uncommon, even among younger
patients who did not have the personal history
of having once used glass syringes with detachable
needles. The most common reason for
reuse of insulin needles is not cost. Instead,
convenience and a reluctance to throw away
something that is not yet “worn out” or “finished
being used,” are the most prevalent reasons
for reuse. Over 70% of patients who inject
insulin have insurance that covers their needles,
and yet many still prefer to reuse insulin needles

ComputerAssisted Needle Insertion

ComputerAssisted Needle Insertion

Clinical practice is increasingly replacing traditional open surgical procedures with minimally invasive techniques for cancer diagnosis and therapy. These procedures typically require placement of a surgical instrument into the organ of interest with a high degree of accuracy. In general, the success of a treatment or of a diagnosis is highly dependent on the accuracy of instrument insertion and thus depends crucially on the skills and the experience of the physician. While intraoperative navigation has been proven to be highly effective in interventions on bony or sufficiently rigid structures, such as the spine and the brain, computerassisted soft tissue procedures are still limited to noninvasive diagnostics and surgical planning. This book discusses contemporary approaches in computerassisted soft tissue interventions. It presents and evaluates a realtime motion compensation method for percutaneous abdominal interventions based on fiducial needles, a guidance method to allow for fast and precise insertion of a needleshaped instrument along a predetermined trajectory and a respiratory liver motion simulator for evaluating the proposed methods in a realistic setting. Realistic Evaluation

Realistic Evaluation

Realistic Evaluation shows how programme evaluation needs to be, and can be bettered. It presents a profound yet highly readable critique of current evaluation practice, and goes on to introduce a manifesto and handbook for a fresh approach. The main body of this book is devoted to the articulation of a new evaluation paradigm, which promises greater validity and utility from the findings of evaluation studies. The authors call this new approach realistic evaluation. The name reflects the paradigms foundation in scientific realist philosophy, its commitment to the idea that programmes deal with real problems rather than mere social constructions, and its primary intention, which is to inform realistic developm Author: Pawson, Ray/ Tilley, Nicholas/ Tilley, Nick Binding Type: Hardcover Number of Pages: 256 Publication Date: 1997/06/23 Language: English Dimensions: 9.66 x 5.90 x 0.77 inches

Therapy Can Help With Phobias

Exposure therapy is suggested to be one of the best ways to overcome your anxiety. To master something in life it is necessary first to think about it, and then actually practice doing it. Remember when you first started to learn how to drive. The more you practiced the better you became. This is the basis of exposure therapy. You actually need to go into the situation and think about it in a different way, implement the other skills and knowledge you have to mange your anxiety, and then reflect on how it went.

There is a word of caution here. Some research suggests 'facing the fear and doing it anyway'. For some people this may work however for others it doesn't. Learning the skills and techniques of cognitive therapy and educating yourself on where your anxiety is actually coming from in the first place, prior to exposing yourself to the situation, can often have better outcomes as you can feel more in control before you enter the situation, rather than going in feeling absolutely terrified.

When you feel anxious, it is suggested that you go through it firstly in your mind (realistic thinking/skills of cognitive therapy), and secondly, put yourself in the situation that you fear. This part is called exposure therapy.

In general, exposure therapy with response prevention is probably one of the most effective treatments. It's a fairly straightforward type of treatment. Some people have already begun it on their own - in a way.

Exposure therapy is what it sounds like, exposing the person to whatever it is that causes their fear. The process usually begins by gradually introducing the patient to the feared situation and works towards helping them develop constructive responses to their fear. For example, a patient with severe arachnophobia (a fear of spiders) may begin by talking about "creatures with eight legs" and end up being able to sweep spiders away when they see one.

The therapy is very systematic. You first write down the situations with spiders that scare you and then categorize them from least frightening to most frightening. You will also have to learn an effective relaxation technique to employ when in these situations.

The next step is to imagine coping with the situations at the lowest levels on your list while engaging in relaxation. Gradually, the anxiety will subside. You stay at the same level until the anxiety provoked by the stimulus becomes tolerable. Then you move on to the next level and you work your way up to the top of the hierarchy. These exercises can be done in imagery as well as in reality.

The final step is gradual exposure. This is done without relaxation. With a trusted person's guidance, you expose yourself to real phobic situations. Again, you proceed step by step, from the least to the most frightening, and remain in the situation until the anxiety subsides.

You can involve pictures of spiders in your exposure therapy when you practice the exposure steps. Starting with a picture of a spider can be a very non-threatening way to at least be able to look at the spider and imagine how you will cope when it's the real thing!
