What is the best home recording package?
I'm a 14 year old guitarist and I really enjoy recording my own music. Check out my site: http://www.blastmymusic.com/electrictone
I record electric guitar, acoustic guitar, drums, bass, and keyboard. I currently own a Fostex MR-8 and Nero Soudtrax (software) to record with and it's very limiting and not very high quality recording.
Me and some friends are thinking of forming a band. 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drum kit, 1-2 vocalists.
I'm looking for a mixer that can work with that
If anyone knows a good combination of software and hardware for a computer-based home recording studio, please share.
Or if you have had experience with some good mixers and software...
I'm pretty sure I'd prefer a firewire mixer.
I've done some research... I just wanna hear from people who have used some equipment that they've liked.
Money doesn't grow on trees here so please give me something reasonable for a 14 year old. (Although I know I will need to save up and beg my parents for money

I listened to your music. Impressive for your age. The composition is pretty solid. I'd be interested to see what you can do with some decent equipment and some vocal tracks added.
You can hear the lack of quality with the recording though. Still you can also hear your potential.
I use an Onyx Mixer and Firewire Card. It comes with Tracktion which is a very underrated, solid piece of software. It comes with great effects and filters to help master and edit. Yah Pro Tools is the greatest thing ever, but it cost really over $20k to get decent plug-ins and really take advantage of the potential of Pro Tools. So don't let the guys sell you can Digi Rack, Mbox 2, or Icon just because of Pro Tools. Cubase and Tracktion are two great recording softwares, that can do everything Pro Tools LE can do. And has great quality.
You can get the Onyx Mixer in 12 channel, 16, or 24. I'd think 12 is plenty, even for a band. 2 Vocal Channels, 1 Bass, 3 Guitars, and 6 Mics on drums = 12 channels. The cool thing about the Onyx is the Preamps and EQ on the mixer are really good for the price. Mackie has being doing mixers for years and put out one of the best products. Also you can pick the mixer up and the firewire card separately. So you don't have to put up $1,030 at once. Check it out.

The other option you have is going with a Rackmount system. But these are not mixers, and you can't take them with you live, like you could with the Onyx.

This is pretty sweet. Comes with Cubase and Presonus does pretty well with preamps. Plenty of inputs to record your band. You just can't use this live.

I don't really recommend this, because it only has 8 inputs. So you'd be limited on the amount of mics to put on your drummer, or you'd have to record separately. This does come with Pro Tools.
Well there's a few options there. I use the Onyx Mixer with Firewire and love the quality.
