Plays the Music of Jerome Kern $14.99 Personnel: Al Haig (piano); Helen Merrill (vocals); Jamil Nasser (bass).Recorded at Downtown Sound, New York, New York in 1978. Originally released on Inner City. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Al Haig.Digitally remastered using HDCD technology by J. Newland (Pacific Microsonics, Berkeley, California). This is part of Gitanes' Helen Merrill Presents series. For this tasteful but obscure set (only reissued on CD by the Japanese Trio label), veteran bop survivor Al Haig plays four unaccompanied piano solos, has four duets with bassist Jamil Nasser, and backs singer Helen Merrill on "They Didn't Believe Me." Although Jerome Kern did not care for jazz, his songs have long been viable vehicles for jazz improvisations, and Haig picked out some of the best ones for the date, including "The Way You Look Tonight," "All the Things You Are" and "The Song Is You." ~ Scott Yanow |

Plays the Music of Harold Arlen $14.99 Personnel: Tommy Flanagan (piano); Helen Merrill (vocals); George Mraz (bass); Connie Kay (drums).Recorded at SNS Productions, New York, New York on September 30 & October 2, 1978. Originally released on Inner City. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.Digitally remastered using HDCD technology by J. Newland (Pacific Microsonics, Berkeley, California). This is part of Gitanes' Helen Merrill Presents series.Originally released by the Japanese Trio label and reissued on a DIW CD in that country, this Tommy Flanagan session has only appeared in the U.S. thus far on an Inner City LP. The very consistent pianist performs nine Harold Arlen tunes with bassist George Mraz and drummer Connie Kay. Highlights include "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," "Sleepin' Bee," "One for My Baby" and "My Shining Hour." Producer Helen Merrill takes a sensitive vocal on "Last Night When We Were Young." Excellent music, but this one will be difficult to locate. ~ Scott Yanow |
