After a couple of EPs (and a stint on Australian Idol) from Lisa Mitchell, Wonder serves as a full-fledged introduction to her particular brand of sweet, tinkling songcraft. Despite a pedigree that might imply sickly sweet pop, her sound is instead more folk-oriented, singer/songwriter-based, and original. Her vocals are small and sweet, but with a deep vulnerability and a strong sense of authenticity. Between the soft piano accompaniments and the occasional glockenspiel, Mitchell could at times be writing (or even singing) a song from Feist -- pay attention to "Red Wine Lips" and the similarities are hard to miss. The style of songwriting is becoming a little more common as female folk-pop artists find their way into the mainstream bit by bit, but it's still something to be appreciated. Mitchell's vocals are what will really get the listener, though: all sweet, unadulterated softness, the lyrics sounding like intimations to close friends -- the listeners themselves. ~ Adam Greenberg

Personnel includes: Mark Feltham (harmonica); Mick Talbot (keyboards); Steve White (timpani); Edgar Summertyme (background vocals); Wired Strings.Producers: Martyn "Max" Heyes, Ocean Colour Scene. It's sort of fitting that the first album Ocean Colour Scene released in the U.S. since their breakthrough and masterpiece Moseley Shoals was 2001's Mechanical Wonder, their weakest since Moseley Shoals. It's not that the record is a failure, since it hardly is. It's just -- kind of predictable, really, offering no new spin or variation on OCS's patented blend of mod, early Humble Pie and latter-day Paul Weller. That's not entirely a bad thing, since Ocean Colour Scene does this sound not just better than their peers (admittedly, in 2001, there weren't that many bands attempting this sound anymore; it's a long way from 1996), but holds its own with the bands they pattern themselves after. The problem is that the songwriting has gotten a little mannered, a little undistinguished, and the performances, while sturdy, tend to be slightly flat. This wouldn't be notable if everything on the record was at the same level, since it would then seem to be just a solid, mildly satisfying album by a sturdy group. It's that the band can still hit it out of the ballpark, no more notably than on the opener "Up on the Downside," a swirling, sexy song that is easily one of their greatest songs. There are other moments that click -- the rampaging "Can't Get Back to the Baseline" or the mildly insistent shuffle of "Give Me a Letter" -- but the first song is so good, it overshadows the rest of the record, which is simply good, average OSC. But, One From the Modern explored more territory with better songwriting, and that disappointment is compounded by that lone great single "Up on the Downside," which illustrates that they can still deliver songs as enthralling as "One Hundred Mile City." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

David Bowie - Little Wonder

Little Donkeys Special Secret

If you are familiar with the story of the nativity you will know that Mary and Joseph had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be counted, a journey of around 95 kilometres. This was no small distance back in those days when there weren’t any motorised vehicles. Additionally the journey was over a hilly terrain, which made the long journey even harder.

Poor Mary was heavily pregnant and the prospect of such a journey must have been daunting. It's little wonder then that she rode a donkey on this long journey.

A special thing happened to the little donkey as it carried it's precious load. As the donkey carried Mary and the unborn Son of God, a mark of the crucifix appeared on the donkey's back. The top of the cross starting on the donkey's neck and running down his spine. The shorter line of the cross ran along the donkey's shoulder blades. The sign of the crucifix was given as a reward to the little donkey for the hard work it had endured, getting pregnant Mary safely to Bethlehem.

To this day the little donkey is honoured for what he did for God, and all the donkeys bear the sign of the crucifix on their backs. You don't usually see the cross because donkeys at the beach are usually wearing saddles, so small children can ride them. Maybe this is why donkeys look so sad, because their special mark is hidden.
