Meribel Ski Discover What You Need To Know
The Meribel ski resort is a vast complex, having grown considerably from the original resort first created at the end of the 1930s. Springing up around the delight village of Meribel, it is a mix of private chalets and apartment blocks. Located in the central valley of the Three Valleys in, the South Easter corner of France, it has been enjoyed by dedicated skiers for decades.
All accommodation in the Meribel ski resort are well designed, many of which have a certain charm unlike many purpose built resorts in the Alps. In Meribel-Village itself, located at the bottom a blue run from Meribel to Courchevel is a great resort for families. Quieter than many, it makes for a relaxing stay if peace rather than vibrant apres ski is sought.
There are individual chalets too, rather than the apartment blocks, and these tend to be drawn towards the Mussillon resort. Right on the main road, the village and all surrounding areas are easily accessible. The main road takes you everywhere throughout the region, including the snow covered airstrip and the very newest development Belvedere, which pulls the young crowd.
Continuing along the main road, the satellite resort of Meribel-Mottaret is not too far away. Located almost exactly in the middle of the Three Valleys area, everything is accessible. This is certainly the case for the three best routes in the region of; Val Thorens, Les Menuires and Courchevel. And it is this that really pulls in the skiers, as the charm here is not what the rest of the region offers. But with such access, it is not a worry to most.
Heading below Meribel itself, the little village of Les Allues is a good place to head for those wishing to get away from the relatively crowded main resorts. Situated right by a mid station for the gondola too, it is a great place to be. Just near here, the spa town of Bride-les-Bains is also a great alternative destination.
Wherever you are through the Meribel ski resorts, there is great accessibility to the slopes. There are regular shuttles season long, whilst public transport is convenient and affordable for those on a budget. Having a car does make things easier however, both for heading to other close by resorts, and for travelling around the immediate vicinity.
A car also comes into its own if ventures further afield are on the agenda. Heading up to Vallon, to see the fantastic scenery in the area, and the wonders of the Mont du Vallon glacier, being a highlight. You may even feel the need to join the skiers that tackle this hardest of slopes in the area.
As would be expected from France, the restaurants are all of a good quality; and quite varied from site to site. In Meribel village, there is a pizzeria and fitness center amongst other facilities; though the more recent developments do have more advanced facilities.
For the best snow in the area, the routes that lie on Mont du Vallon, Les Menuires and Val Thorens are excellent, being north-facing. A lot of work has also gone in to ensuring greater availability of powder in Meribel itself over recent years.
Meribel ski resort will always attract all levels of skiers, but are particularly well suited to those taking their first outings. They are not the hardest or most challenging of routes, but are quite varied and make for a fantastic destination through most seasons.
