i want to make my own dog food? a lengthy question and i appreciate everyones valuable time to answer?
what is the difference between everyday food and treats. when i look at the recipes how can i tell the difference? 90 % of the recipes are not labeled as "everyday meals" or "everyday treats" i am so confused . can i go strictly by the breakdown of ingredient ratios of protein, starch, vegetables, fiber. i want to be cautious. i know onions and sugar are no nos. thanks to everyone
So glad you asked..Reading labels on dog food cans/dry food can be totally confusing. I have shown Afghan Hounds for 35+ yrs. and presently own a greyhound and a chihuahua as well..and they all eat the same food I prepare.I don't know what breed dog you own but, this 'recipe' suits them all quite well. You have read the ingredients on canned dog food. Even some of the top brands will list 'meat by products' or' water for processing' at the top of the list. Do you have any idea what 'meat by products' consist of?? Anything from road kill to euthanized animals. They must use preservatives to insure freshness when you purchase them. Any commercial food will satisfy your dogs hunger, but it does not mean it is good for them. Calm your fears and make your own. I've been doing it for a looooong time and my critters are healthy, happy, and well adjusted. My Afghans are in gorgeous show coat, my grey's coat is shiny and sleek with very little shedding and my old chihuahua is still alert and spry. The food i make is all fresh and preservative free. Interested?? o.k. First of all, obviously, i cannot make the kibble. For this I have been feeding Solid Gold Maintainance which I purchase from the health store. It is expensive, but my dogs are worth it. For the 'wet food' I make my own. It is very easy and provides me enough for at least two weeks. If you are feeding one small dog it will last you a whole lot longer. And it is a whole lot less expensive than buying the canned food! Here is what I do:
Put ground beef and ground turkey in a large pot.(Amount of each is about equal to the size of a grapefruit) cover it with water a couple of inches over the top of the meat. Bring it to a slow boil...then i add three or four beef boullion cubes, chop up carrots, potatoes, broccolli, 2-3 cups frozen peas, chopped parsley, celery, sweet basil, (herbs are great for dogs) a good amount of garlic powder .. NO ONIONS and let it slow boil for an hour or so. Just before it is 'done' I add a couple of cups of barley and/or lentils and let it slow simmer for a while more. You may have to add a bit more water. Then I make a gravy mixture of a couple of tbs. of cornstarch to some water, mix it thorougly and add it to the 'stew'. When it has cooled I pack it in containers, I keep enough in the refrig for a few days feeding and freeze the rest. The dogs love it and it's good for them and best of all. I know what is in there. I also make my own treats and cookies but thats another story. If you are interested, let me know. Is the protein shake MRI Pro NoS good for you?
I bought it at GNC store and the seller recommended it because it has 42 g and it tastes better than most. However, when I came home, I noticed on nutrition information it has 80 mg of cholesterol per one serving (on GNC website the label has 55 mg). I think it has a lot of cholesterol and I hesistate to open. I had psychical exam half year ago and doctor recommended me diet in low cholesterol and fat. However I have heard that dietary cholesterol has only little impact on serum cholesterol in your body. On front of package, it says it reduces trunk (belly) fat by 4.3$. It also amplifies nitric oxide levels by 950%. Should I return it, or is it safe?
I forgot to add one important thing. I work out (do weight lifting) 3 times a week. So I need diet in high proteins
honestly i didn't read everything.......but this is what i know about protein. anything protein shake, bars, etc. they NO good for you. because you already take in enough protein from what you eat everyday. things like that aren't nescessary
