Can a head unit power 2 tweeters?
Right now, I have a JVC cd player in my car and 1 amp powering 2 6x9 speakers and 2 6 1/2 speakers. I also have 1 amp powering a sub.
I just bought 2 Fosgate R1T-1 1" tweeters and wondering if I can run them right off my head unit. Will it blow them? Can my 4 channel MB Quartz be used to power the 2 tweeters plus my 4 component speakers?
The tweeters say 80 watts max, my head unit its probably 50x4
Also, will 2 tweeters make that much difference to overall sound?
Yep your headunit can power your tweeters safely. The main thing you need to be careful of when running tweeters is to make sure you have a crossover, or they have a crossover built-in. Tweeters are very sensitive to and can easily be damaged by bass signals. Crossovers for tweeters usually cut all the frequencies from below about 2000Hz. Sometimes lower, sometimes higher, depending on the tweeters specs.
Your amp can safely power them as well, keeping in mind the above. Also keep in mind if you parallel your component speakers and the tweeters that the effective impedance will be halved. For example, if your tweeters are 4 ohms and your component speakers are 4 ohms then the load on your amp will be 2 ohms, but only above the crossover point. So basically make sure your amp is 2 ohm stable if you do this.
Will they make a difference? Sure, depending on placement and volume. You can even make your music sound worse by bad placement (you music may sound 'shrill') so make sure you try them out before you mount them permanently.
