Why is it better to use light intensity rather than distance from the lamp?
For my biology homework! Here is the experiment we did, it's about photosynthesis:
1Fill a boiling tube about three-quarters full with warm water containing a small amount of sodium hydrogencarbonate.
2Select an Elodea plant already producing bubbles and place it in the boiling tube. The cut end of the stem should point upwards.
3Place the boiling tube in a large beaker of warm water.
4Put a thermometer into the water in the boiling tube.
5Place a lamp 40 cm away from the beaker.
6Allow the Elodea to adjust to these conditions for about five minutes.
7Count the number of bubbles rising up the test tube in one minute and record the temperature.
8Move the lamp to 30 cm away from the beaker.
9Repeat instructions 6 and 7
10 Repeat instructions 6 and 7 for the lamp at distances of 20 cm, 15 cm and 10 cm away from the beaker.
HELP?
By using light intensity, you better quantify your experiment, making it more repeatable. You also get a more accurate representation of reaction to light, because the inverse cube law involved with distance and light intensity.
