Ground Turntable PreAmp
How can i fix my turntable?
I have a Technics SL-1200 MK2, and I am using it for audiophile purposes. It is a player i got secondhand, so it is cosmetically scuffed up, but internally it seems fine. The bass output is however very diminished. It should be much higher, but the odd thing is that when i only have one channel (that is to say left or right), plugged into my preamp, the bass is appropriate, but when i plug in the other it almost disappears. I have used different headshells and cartridges, different preamps, speakers, and amps, so i'm wondering what I might have to work on on the inside of the turntable. The ground is also properly secured btw.
i'll check it out, but let me mention that the sl-1200mk2 has the RCAs soldered to the board.
well that was definitely it. When i pan over to either channel the bass improves, but drops once i center the balance. but what can i do now?
It simply sounds like you have one channel somewhere in the chain out of phase. When one channel is connected out of phase to the other you will get a cancellation of bass information as well as no mono (center image) content. If all other sources are fine then somewhere at the turntable (probably at the headshell leads to the cartridge) one of the channels is wired reversed. Make sure the correct color leads on the headshell are going to the appropriate connectors on the cartridge. Continue to check somewhere in the connections to the Receiver from the turntable to find where it is reversed. It is "possible" that the cartridge is internally wired out of phase it rarely happens but keep that in mind, just reverse the hot and return on one channel of the cartridge.
