Why won't my microwave turntable stop spinning?

I have GE microwave and the turntable is in motion when the door is off and the oven is not being used. The only time it does not spin is with the door open. GE's website is very difficult to search through and there is no mention of such an issue in the handbook. There is an on/off switchh on the microwave, but I've already tried that. Any ideas?
