Emt Mod

2 questions how can I be more "assertive" in the EMS field and am I even cut out for it?
I am a 20 y/o M who loves the ems field, my dad is a paramedic also (I am an EMT). I have only been an EMT for about 6-8months. My problem is that I always seem to get into trouble at work either because I am not very confident( partly cause I feel like a loser I take iron for low iron a depression med and an alllergy med on top of multiple vitamins and I always feel immature and I feel like I make alotta mistakes) in myself or some other reason (and I can't drive a mod ambulance worth crap
) anyway I feel like I just can'tget the hang of the field does anyone have any advice on imrpoving myskills and hopefully inccreasing my assertivness/confidence in the EMS field?
p.s. sorry if this is confusing I just had to get it off my chest (whew).
EMS is one of those fields where you learn something every single day. And the day you stop learning is the day you need to get off the ambulance. I have been a Critical Care Paramedic for 10 years and I still learn something new everyday that I work. I am also a female - so, when I first got into the business (I was only 18), I had to work doubly hard to prove myself - because I was so young and a female.
Trust me - it gets better with time. You are still very, very "green" and you haven't yet come into your own in terms of EMS. I'm sure that you get a lot of flack because your dad is medic and I know that has to be tough.
The fact that you take multiple meds has nothing to do with your work performance other than the fact that you are allowing it to affect it. You have to get over the mental holdbacks before you work on anything else.
As for driving the mod, that comes with time and practice. I have dented a whole bunch of ambulance bumpers in my day. Talk to a training officer at your place of employment and ask about EVOC classes or see if your dad can help you practice.
As for your skills, practice makes perfect. I have been doing this for 10 long years and I still miss IV sticks or intubations. Anyone in EMS who tells you that they never miss a stick is a big, fat liar. Everybody misses sometimes. Again, talk to a training officer at your place of work about getting some extra practice. Go to wherever you went to EMT school and see if you can sit in on classes. Alot of your skills just take time to cultivate and refine.
Alot of the insecurities you have could be if you have a bad partner. When I first started out, my very first partner was horrible. He was a brand new paramedic and had major attitude about it. He thought I was nothing but his slave and there to drive for him and clean up after him. He was totally unwilling to try and teach me anything. EMT school will teach you procedure - experience will teach you the real thing. I hope that you have a good partner and if you don't see if you can swap shifts and/or partners. A good partner will teach you and encourage you. I got a string of very, very good partners after my first one and I credit them with everything that I know to this day. One of those partners is my mentor and is actually the one who encouraged me to go to Paramedic School and then on to Critical Care.
Trust me, I started out just like you. I was scared, not confident at all, and felt worthless. Then one day, it just clicked in my head. "Hey, I don't suck at this job, I went to school and passed the boards just like everybody else here." That's the day that I stopped taking crap off of people and my confidence grew from there. As my confidence grew, I saw my skills improving right along with them. And less than 5 years later, I was Head Field Operations Supervisor.
Best of luck to you - don't get discouraged. You know what you are doing, you just haven't quite found your "voice" yet. Find someone who is knowledgable and ask them to help you. If they are a good paramedic or EMT, they will help you find your place in the world of EMS.
