Mortgage quandary - 15 yr fixed to pay off early or 30 yr fixed to have extra cash to put away?
We can afford to pay a higher principal amount and pay off our mortgage with a 15 year fixed rate loan. Is it more sensible to build equity in our home from which we do not plan on moving from or to switch to a 30 year fixed and use the difference of about $1,000 in the monthly payments to invest? And what investments are suggested?
Take the 30 yr and invest the rest. Compounding interest is a beautiful thing. That's $180,000 invested over the first 15 years.
