How do I go about finding a solution for this Algebra System of Linear Equations Word Problem?
Here is the word problem:
In a family there are two cars. The sum of the average miles per gallon obtained by the two cars in a particular week is 45. The first car has consumed 25 gallons during that week, and the second has consumed 20 gallons, for a total of 975 miles driven by the two cars combined. What was the average gas mileage obtained by each of the two cars in that week?
I don't need the answer as much I as would like an easy to follow explanation. Thanks in advance!
Also, if you could provide the proper formulas, I would really appreciate it.
Let the first car had an average x and the second y
Then,
the first car moved 25x miles in that week
and the second moved 20y miles
Now
x+y = 45, and
25x+20y=975

I need help on this question it is driving me nuts.
Linear Systems Algebraically by Substitution.
4(1-2x) = 3(3-y) - 12
2(3x-1) - (y+4) = -7
My answer just doesn't seem right... no matter what I do.
Any help would be appreciated.
4 - 8x = 9 - 3y - 12
- 8x + 3y = - 7
6x - 2 - y - 4 = - 7
6x - y = - 1
y = 6x + 1
- 8x + 3 (6x + 1) = - 7
10 x = - 10
x = - 1
y = - 6 + 1
y = - 5
x = - 1 , y = - 5
