Training NLP Proves The Learning Curve On NLP Courses
It doesn’t understand feelings and hunches, because they’re not logical or rational. The unconscious mind always tells you the truth, you can feel it in your gut, and it learns from experience, not things. Ever ignored a hunch, only to regret it later? I know I have. This is critical -
ALL Learning, all behaviour and all change IS UNCONSCIOUS
Learning- How much of the School syllabus that you learned do you use now? Do you remember how you first learned the alphabet, the difference between a p and a q, and then you learned to put them together into words? Spelling tests? Do you remember that stuff? And where is your phone number stored? Where was it till I mentioned it? I keep my bank card PIN number in my right forefinger. I can just walk up to the bank machine and my finger automatically types it for me, I don’t have to think about it. Now that’s a useful finger!
I bet you can sing songs right now yet you never formally studied the lyrics. How is that possible? Probably because you were relaxed when you heard it, it was repeated a couple of times, and you were having fun. Hmmmmm, magic formula. Now is that how you were taught in school? Probably not. I spent most of my school years stressed, expected to get it right first time and hating every minute of it. Was it only me that had that experience?
All human skill development goes through 4 stages. At first, you aren’t even aware that you’re lacking in a skill set. Once you learn that, you wonder if the skill really does work. And if they do, will you be able to learn them? That’s when any limiting beliefs about learning kick in: “Will I be able to do it, after all, it took me forty lessons to pass my driving test?”. What if they do work and you do learn it? “Will that make me a better person, or a smart arse? Maybe I won’t bother going into this any further….” Does this sound familiar at all?
At first you don’t even know that you’re crap at something, because you have never even tried! Something may be broken but you’re unaware of what it is. You may have a vague notion something is wrong, but have no idea how to fix it, or indeed, what to fix. You don’t know it’s there until you become aware of it. Like the first time you tried to ride a bicycle. There was a time when you hadn’t even thought of riding a two wheeled piece of metal, then one day you tried, and you became intimately familiar with the road surface.
Now you know there’s work to be done. There’s something to learn here. So now you’re excited at the possibility, but you’re also scared of trying and scared of failing, looking stupid, getting it wrong. Like learning to drive a car - you don’t even think about it until one day, and now you want to be able to drive. But there’s so much to learn. 3 pedals, at least 4 forward gears and a steering wheel as well?
The next stage up is when you now try to do something and you are fully aware of how hard it is. It all feels unfamiliar and ungainly, clumsy. You know what to do but you can’t do it yet. That’s frustrating, and often confusing. So you stall the car several times, or crunch the gears. Now you know you’re crap at it! You know what to do, but you don’t seem to be able to do it yet!
Conscious competence now means that as long as you concentrate really hard and focus, then you can do the new skill, but it takes a lot of effort and repetition. Sometimes you need to remind yourself of what to do. So now you can overtake and you’re saying “mirror - signal - manoeuvre” over and over again in your head. It’s not fully integrated yet, but you are using the skill successfully.
Unconscious Competence is the level of mastery, where you use the skills automatically. They are now part of your everyday life and you don’t have to think about it. Nowadays you can start the car, switch on your mobile, look at a map, in the dark, in snow, and you don’t bat an eyelid! You never find yourself putting the car key in the ignition and then asking yourself “Now how does this work again?” It’s automatic.
Imagine then, if you could skip all that effort, and make a quantum leap - by going straight to Unconscious Competence. How? Train the unconscious mind. It’s quicker and shaves years off your learning curve! Imagine the possibilities for a moment…
All Training needs to train the audience’s Unconscious Mind to create change. If you’re training their Conscious minds then they won’t retain it for long, and they’ll just go back to their old ways. Isn’t that the problem with most training courses? They get all psyched up for a few days then the bubble bursts and they’re back to square one. Or worse, because they spent all that money on that team building event and now they’re even more disappointed and cynical.
We operate from unconscious desires and compulsions, and we filter information massively, and unconsciously.
Behaviour - You have something like 159 muscles in your arm - when you clicked on this page, you didn’t do it consciously. That would take way too long. Muscle 5, then tendon 37, then extensor 114. No, you just went “mouse - click!” Put your hand up if you can drive? Good unconscious arm movement there! Most people drive in an unconscious trance - and have no recollection of the traffic lights being out at the big junction, yet you must have driven through them. Or it’s the weekend and you end up at work by mistake….. Who was driving the car………?
Change - ever tried to stop smoking, or stop eating something that’s bad for you, or change a habit consciously? Does that work? Rarely. If it did, your best friend could say “stop eating chocolate now!” and you would. Or you could diary in bouts of guilt between 7 and 8 every Thursday night. If only it were conscious. When people change their ways, it’s because they’ve changed at the unconscious level. That’s why NLP is so important and so powerful.
