Drive Automatic System
1990 chevy 3/4 ton van 350 automatic TBI system with 200,000 miles. cold starting problem?
when you 1st start the engine it will run for a few seconds and die but will start right back up. it will go thru this scenerio 4 or 5 times and then it seems to run okay and drives down the road just fine. while warmed up it will restart just fine but after sitting 3 or 4 hrs the problem returns. I replaced the fuel filter. cleaned and installed new gaskets in the TBI unit, rebuilt the pressure regulator,(had broken spring) new pcv valve, Egr valve checks good(vacum) is opening and closing. when it dies it's like you just turned the key off. van had tune up a couple months ago, new wires,cap, rotor ,and plugs and problem showed up for the 1st time Monday morning. The ecm is not showing any fault codes. hopefully someone's had this issue and knows what will fix it. Thanks

The very first thing I would check is the coolant temperature sensor for the PCM (not the instrument cluster sender).
If the PCM thinks the engine is warm, it won't add the extra fuel necessary for cold running (think choke here).
Check the connection at the sender, and check also the ground wire located on the stud at the thermostat housing. If there is a poor ground connection here, it will affect the voltage returning to the PCM. Also make sure that the stud threads are clean and free from corrosion in the manifold.
You may also want to check the MAP sensor signal voltage when cold. If it is sending a signal that you are at high altitude, the fuel delivered won't be enough to make the engine run until it warms up, or the crystal inside the sensor shakes out enough to provide a correct and proper signal.
Incidentally, have you queried the PCM for Diagnostic Trouble Codes? This can be a great help in diagnosing these sorts of issues.
