DJ Turntable Vinyls
Vinyl or CD DJ turntables?
I'm not sure which one I should get. I'm gonna be a beginner. So I'm looking for something that will be easy to start with, yet has a great longterm quality. Which would you suggest I get?
I strongly suggest vinyl.
If you're just starting out you won't be hauling your gear to a different venue a few times a week which is really the ONLY advantage to a CDJ.
Plus, even if you want to go CD further down the road it really helps to learn with vinyl. It will give you a much better concept of the workflow and signalflow. Its also much easier to learn with and mix with as its all physical. Being completely analog you can see the record speeds slowing down and speeding up, you can "grab" the part of the song you want to start with or mix in and "place" it into the mix with your hands. This is a much better idea of what you're doing when compared to pressing a single play/pause button.
Also, I've seen tons of people perform with cdj's and for some reason they all trainwreck at some part of their mix. Really.
Its going to take some time to get used to vinyl decks but you will appreciate the art form much more. Also, the records have a pretty decent resell value (which cd's don't) and digging for vinyl to collect is half of the fun.
Don't buy all scratch records, get music and albums. Record your mixes and listen to them yourself. I like to put my demo's on my iPod and listen to them over & over when I'm away from the decks to better critique my mixes.
Its all about having fun making something that you would love to listen to.
