What equipment do I need to become a hip hop dj?
i want to do scratching and all of the stuff hip hop djs do. i don't want to produce music, just cut and scratch. I know i need a turntable and mixer. is there anything else? and could you recommend good brands because i have no knowledge about any good turntables
A pair of direct drive turntables. Technics are the most popular, but I'd go for a model in the Stanton STR8 series, because they cost less and are arguably better. They have stronger torque than the Technics. I have STR8-100's.
You need a good pair of battle cartridges to go with the turntables. Shure MM4-7 cartridges have long been considered the best, but Ortofon and Stanton are making great rivals these days. Again, I like Stanton.
You need some good slipmats to reduce fricton. Butter Rugs get a lot of hype about being the best, but a lot of people just cut out a piece of wax paper the size and shape of the stock slipmat and put it underneath.
Get a battle mixer (the small kind) rather than a club mixer (the big long kind). Most brands have a good mixer out there. Rane is considered one of the best mixer brands, whereas you should avoid Gemini products, which are very cheap. Stanton is a good mid-range.
Next, you need headphones for monitoring and mixing. Most DJ brands are good (Pioneer, Stanton, Technics, etc.). Just make sure they're DJ style with the rotating ear cup so you can use just one ear.
Then, you need a stereo system to amplify and play the music. If you're going to DJ as a business, you'll want a pro audio amplifier like a Crown, Mackie, or QSC brand. If you're just going to be a bedroom DJ and mess around, you could use almost any amplifier or receiver. The same goes with speakers. You can spend the money on big Mackie, JBL, Peavey or whatever PA speakers or just get some old home stereo ones. Some people like the compactness of powered speakers, which are speakers and amps in one. They aren't usually as powerful as a separate amp, but they're an all in one package, which is nice.
Finally, road cases are highly recommended to protect your equipment. Then, buy some records and start playing around!

I'm looking for tracks i can buy off of itunes. i want some scratching to listen to. the latest music, scratched and mixed, turntable style in a NON-TECHNO, ALL HIP-HOP kind of way...i don't know who to search for as far as dj artists or what to even put in the search engine.
