What Is A Director?
What Is A Director?
The director is the person who shoots a film. He or she is the person charged with walking the audience through a story, in a way that is realistic, touching, and entertaining. In other words, the director is the person responsible for bringing a show to life. For example, when a movie is being filmed, it is the director's job to piece together the lighting, set, props, backgrounds, camera angles and actor performances necessary to make the film look good on the big screen.
The director is second in command, next to the movie's producer. And while, other individuals may be directly responsible for acting performances, lighting, etc., the director is ultimately responsible for fitting all those different pieces together.
What Are The Director's Primary Responsibilities?
- Filming
- Casting
- Directions
- Arranging
- Editing
Filming
The director’s most important role comes in the form of shooting the film. It is the director’s job to take the scenes in the script and bring them to life. In order to make that happen, the director must blend the principal actors, supporting actors, lighting crew, set designers, costume designers into one organized and entertaining unit.
Casting
One of the first duties of the director is to aide the casting director in selecting the right actors to perform in the production. This is, of course, extremely important. Failure to place the right actors in the right parts can make or break a film.
Directions
The director is the primary person who gives directions and suggestions to actors, often called notes, about how they should perform. If an actor performs his role in a way that doesn’t quite fit the scene, for instance, it is the director’s job to mold that performance into one that does fit. The director must navigate through the egos of well-paid actors to get the performance he feels will work best in the scene.
Arranging
Producing a great scene includes producing great scenery. In the end, the director is responsible for looking into his camera and seeing what the audience will eventually see. Therefore, the director must make sure the lighting is right, the scenery is appealing, the camera angles are appropriate and the movement is stimulating.
Editing
Along with the director’s many roles, he must also help to edit the film in the post-production phase (after all the filming has taken place). Here, the director will get his final chance to put the finishing touches on what he hopes will be a successful, entertaining film.

Back with Orlando Bloom! All right, so your new movie is (huh) not only ARE YOU IN IT, you're also the executive producer… "HAVEN" is the name of it, right?
-uh-huh, Yeah.
-And– Tell everybody what that's about.
-HAVEN is (ahmn) a very small movie that I did IN AMONGST ALL THOSE those big ones, which (huh)– and I'm very, very fond of it. I met this young director, he's (huh)– he was 24 at THE time, he wrote (huh)– I saw his SHORT FIRST OF ALL, WHICH WAS THIS THING CALLED “SWALLOW”, AND IT WAS, in 20 minutes you felt like you WERE watchING a full-lengTH feature, IT WAS so emotionALLY IMPACTIVE and he (huh)… he wrote this sort of TREATMENT script IDEA, AND initially I was like "Yeah, it's great!", but the character he wanted me for wasn't kind of what I was looking for, but there was– the character of Shy, WHO I ended up PLAYING, was written for… a young _____ kid of 16. And I said "That's a COOL character!" and "It's going to be a great movie". He said "Why won't we TWEAK AROUND WITH IT?", and 24 hours later or something like that, he came back with, like, a great script, with the character written FOR me, but not like… in the sort of STYLE VEHICLE way, you know, in a way it was really organic, IT WAS made THE kind of central sort of pieces of the movie, which was my character and this– and this girl. It sort of feels like a Romeo and Juliet love story, it's kind of– it's basically IN A NUTSHELL, it's a– I'm a kid side FROM the wrong side of the trackS, IN LOVE WITH A RICH black girl, and her father … IT’S a CLASS sort of thing, AS opposed to a RACE thing–
-Yeah.
-Her father was like, you know– "I’VE workED FOR this piece of land ON THIS ISLAND, and I'm not having some SCRUBBY LITTLE DOGHAND coming and taking my– my beautiful prized daughter away", you know?
-Yeah. She was really good, too. What's her name?
-It's Zoe Saldana, she's fantastic, yeah. She does a really ______ work.
-Yeah, really good. What clip are we going to see?
-I think WE’RE SEEING a clip now with… me and… Kimo, who's my best BUDDY friend, and… SOMETHING HORRIFIC HAPPENS to my character IN the movie, he– because the love–
-Don't give it away!
-Okay. Well, you'll see someth- something really scary happens like… I GET physically SCARRED — anyhow, this– this clip now– where my– my little friend has sort of… (ahmn) he was supposed to be kind of helping me, kind of take my foot ON THE GIRL’S FIRST NIGHT OF WOMANHOOD, he was supposed to be keeping an eye out for the older brother AND THE father TO come back and he didn't, and so IT all TURNS INTO rubbish, so–
-Yeah, and you get in trouble.
-They ______!
-All right. Take a look.
-"I'll catch YOU later, uh?"
-“ _____! YOU CAN’T JUST EXPECT TO DROP OUT OF the world, man? IT’S just looks! You're still the same person. Oh my God!"
-"IT’S just looks… you WANNA TRY WALKING AROUND like this?"
-Yeah!
-Uuuuh! BIT OF intensity!
-Yeah.
-I DUNNO WHO CHOSE THAT CLIP!
Considering he’s lead writer, director, producer and star – I think it was his choice, which is a minor annoyance but still..
