What would be the main cause of a direct drive turntable suddenly reversing when the pitch is moved?

I recently bought a Citronic PD-1 MK2 which I knew was faulty but think can be fixed, because apart from this weird problem, the deck is fine and in good condition. When the pitch is set at 0, it plays at a constant speed and all is well, but as soon as the pitch slider is moved, it will play at funny speeds and even stop and do a slight reverse motion. What I need to know is, whether it's a problem associated with the pitch control, or a drive problem with the magnet internally.

it sounds like the pitch switch is going bad or the contacts are dirty.
