Wanting To be A scratch DJ?

For the last 5 years of my life i have been super into watching DJs and learning about scratching, I have messed around on some of the digital stuff but i dont like how it doesnt use records or anything like that. I need to know how hard is it to learn and is this a good setup for my first Turntables?

To charlie, i only have like 250 bucks can you suggest a good setup?

No, that setup won't work very well if you want to be a scratch DJ. You need direct drive decks, not belt drives. Otherwise you won't get any traction when you're trying to scratch. Also, you would want to get a mixer that is much more robust. The crossfader in particular is going to take a fair battering, so you need one that won't fall apart after five minutes.

A digital set up is not really an option if you want to be a proper scratch DJ either.

Scratching is like any aspect of DJ'ing. It's not easy if you want to do it properly. The only way you'll get any good is with a lot of practice. I'm talking about months and years rather than hours and days here. If you're looking for instant, overnight results, forget it. It won't happen. If you take pride in learning, doing things properly and don't get frustrated or bored too easily, scratch DJ'ing might well be for you.

Where to begin [DJ'ing]?

Hey guys got a little question for ya.

I recently sold my guitar amp and guitars and decided to go with something a little more my style some turntables and a mixer.

Here's what I've got:
2 Technic 1200mk5 Turntables
1 Behringer DDM4000 Mixer
1 Copy of Traktor

Alright now that I've told you what I've got here's my question

What do I do now? I have some records that I like, I can kinda scratch and I sort of understand the mixer, but where do I go from here? Around May most of the kids around my town are going to be graduating and I'm hoping to get booked for some parties around then.

Should I buy a digital turntable for CD's and Mp3's so that I can get more of a variety of music before then? I don't really have cash to shell out to get records, and they aren't all that easy to find in my area.

Any tips or tricks you'd like to share, or helpful advice, send it my way I'm DEFINITELY going to need it!

Thanks alot,

DJ Arsenal

Congrats on getting into DJing. It's a great and healthy hobby to have. Firstly, I understand it can be hard to start DJing if you don't have alot of vinyl at your disposal. What you should start doing is looking for local deals on lots of multi-genre records sold all at once. Check your local swap-and-sells, flee markets, Craiglist (recommended highly), and newpaper/ Pennysaver ads. Often you can pick up a couple hundred records, sift through them, and resell the ones you don't want for more than you originally bought the whole lot for. It just takes time but "digging crates" is fun and will gives you alot of experience. And don't only look for rap specifically because rap got its roots in funk, soul, and jazz as well. Some of the best background grooves and samples can be found in these genres as well.
I would also recommend making a list of your "wantlist" and keeping track of it on a site like discogs.com. That way you won't forget about a record you wanted this week when next week comes around.
As far as your recommendation to going digital, I would say that isn't such a bad idea because then you can have alot of material right from the start to choose from. Just remember that mixing using those sources has to be just as good as how you are on vinyl. Most mixers nowadays you can plug in a mp3 player and use the fader just like you would for the 1 & 2 turntables.
You may want to practice with beat matching and fading/mixing with a computer program such as Virtual DJ or DJDecks to get used to composing a set based on BPMs and such.
Good luck - keep up the good work...you'll only get better with time.
