Color Tonearm
Will you help me find an entry-level audiophile quality turntable?
I’m trying to find an entry-level audiophile quality turntable that I don’t have to remove the platter to change the turntable speed.
I prefer either semi or fully automatic operation but I’m told that those features detract from the overall sound quality and that the “better” audiophile turntables are fully manual.
It also MUST HAVE a cue lever.
I presume they all will have anti-skating feature.
Is that right?
I prefer matte black as opposed to spending more for any other color.
Do they all come with solid construction tonearm or are there any with a removable headshell.
I’m told that a solid construction tonearm is better for sound quality.
A removable headshell might be easier for me to work with.
Can this be done for less than $500? And of course + tax + S&H.
A Technics SL-1200 MkII would be absolutely ideal for your needs. It meets all of your requirements and it is a brilliantly-engineered, audiophile quality deck. You won't find anything better for $500 or less.
Couple it with a decent budget cartridge (Audio Technica AT440MLa is a good one) and you are laughing.
Just ignore the bleating of the audiophile snobs who insist that you buy a MDF-plinthed belt driven Rega clone hand crafted by Ukranian peasants, the sort that you have to remove the platter from to change speed. These turntables do give good results, but not as good as the Technics. Nor are they anywhere near as solidly built or easy to use.
I did once try something called a Pro-Ject Debut, a Czech made Rega lookalike thing with push button speed change, and frankly I was disappointed with the quality. The motor was very noisy too. I swapped it for a Technics and I've been listening happily ever since.
