can I record my class with a video recorder?

I am interested in recording my class with a video recorder for the sake of discipline. I have nothing to hide, but some of the kids certainly do and I'd love to play video of their actions when their parents accuse me of lying.

I will talk with my union lawyer about this, but until I do I'd like to know if it is legal to set up a camera in my classroom.

I was told by a fellow teacher that we can video without permission only IF the video doesn't record sound as well. Is this true? But I've heard of teachers running a tape player during class t record the students to show parents exactly how their "angel" talks....is this legal?
I really don't care about trust at this point. I care about truth.

What state are you in? Do you teach in a public school? (If so, your actions constitute "state action").

Aside from speaking with your union lawyer, do you plan to speak with the school administration?

Do you plan to hide the camera or be open with the kids that you are taping?

Do you really think that doing this will facilitate discipline or is it more likely to engender even further distrust among you, your students, and their parents?

Twenty First Century Classroom

Earth is already a whole decade into a new century and with it has come advances in science and vast quantities of new technology. As well as the business and personal advantages, classrooms in secondary schools are becoming more advanced. Schools are becoming more at ease with computers as pupils spend a considerable volume of their learning time using one. It's now common to find rows of computers with internet access in a school's library because it's seen as an excellent learning resource. Although textbooks are still currently the main source of learning in schools, the internet and academic ebooks are catching up with lots of students surfing the web to find the required information.

In the classroom, new instruments are being added to help enhance learning. These new tools are designed to make both learning and teaching easier for the teacher and the student. Interactive whiteboards have been introduced in the last few years to classrooms. It has been used to replace old blackboards and paper flip charts. Statistics show from surveys produced by a team from the Manchester Metropolitan University that since the introduction of interactive whiteboards to classrooms in secondary schools, students of a lower ability have made significant progress. It proves that this new way of teaching and learning works.

The interactive whiteboard has its advantages and uses for nearly every subject available on a school curriculum. As the interactive whiteboard is connected to a computer and a projector, it can be used as a DVD player to play educational DVDs and appropriate clips regarding the subject. Being connected to the internet also allows the teacher to project images and pages/articles onto the whiteboard for the students to read and take down.

For subjects that require a lot of demonstrating, some interactive whiteboards may give you the option of recording your instructions so they are kept on file. This means that if a student needs you to repeat something, all you need to do is press replay. Of course, if that doesn't work, maybe another explanation is required. If the teacher wishes to save all their files electronically, that means for those who have been absent from school, are able to get a copy of work quickly instead of rummaging for the correct sheets.

The introduction of interactive whiteboards in secondary schools has helped many students progress faster with their learning. It is a new skill for teachers to learn too. As technology advances every day, education must maintain its drive to make sure it's not left behind.
