Are there any hidden overheads that i should look out for as an event dj?

I'm just starting out and i have 2 PAs( one for little gigs and one for big gigs) a laptop, turntables mixer and a cdj system. I play music from multiple sources in my show. Currently doing mostly free or discounted parties to get my name out there, but hoping to get more exposure by doing so. JUst worried if there is a charge i am over looking, like ASCAP or RIAA fees or something that i would need to pay that i am missing. It seems like getting paid the amount that event djs do for mostly owning the equipment and being able to tell what kind of music the audience is having fun with is nuts. i just think there would be more. if there's not, i guess that's good, but i wanted to have my basis covered. i would hate to be sued with no way to defend myself.

DJ interfaces?

Ok, I understand that this might be a topic already posted by danny, but the details are not specific enough for me.

I currently use 2 vinyl decks, a 9" mixer, and a PA to bring it to life. I have Stantons, T.60 turntables and M.201 mixer. I think I am ready to upgrade. I am tired of buying 10 dollar vinyl, carrying it around, and keeping it clean. I think that I am going to switch all out to digital.

I am thinking about the Cortex dMix 300 to be the basis of my DJing right now. Its a nice unit, 19" long with a built in mixer. Easy stow and go. Therefore, I can sell my mixer and PA for some money (which I kinda need right now). And if i must, my T.60's as well.

Now, if I go digital, I might need one of these DJ interfaces like Serato Scratch Live, Traktor DJ, Deckadance, or whatever. I want to go for something that is affordable for me right now ($200-$400) and that I will be able to get some use out of. Thing is, I dont know everything about these interfaces. If I DJ live,

although a little out of your stated budget, Rane Serato is the way to go.. I used to use Final Scratch until Serato came out. I have never had an issue at all. I'm running it on a PC, but supposedly Mac is even more reliable... You should do the research, and save up the money to do it right. You would be very upset to spend $400 on a system, and then however many months later decide you want something better. Also, I dont know if you DJ in any clubs, but most of them nowadays (at least the decent ones) have Serato already tapped into their booths, so all you need to do is bring your laptop and plug in...

i might even be able to get you a decent discount on that or any other gear you want, email me if youre interested...
