Why does my turntable turn backwards?

I have an old LXI series belt drive automatic turntable. I haven't had it running for years. For some reason, when I have it play, it rotates backwards. I've taken it apart to look at it and I can see nothing wrong. The only thing I could think of is that I must plug it into an IBM subwoofer for power (which outputs 12 V DC). Could there be too much power going to the turntable that it would turn backwards?
My dad helped me out with this one. He told me to cut the power cable and switch the wires. I did this and it turns the right way. Just be sure that when you cross the wires, they are separate, cause I think I about burned up my power supply.

DC power flows in one direction.
Are you able to turn the power plug around?
Another thing to try is spin the table the correct way slowly and then power it on. Does it still spin backwards. I used to play my old table backwards by spinning it and turning it on.
Maybe the belt is supposed to be turned?
