Automatic Turntable Why didn't the automatic return kick in on my Kenwood KD 30-70 Turntable?
Today I was listening to a 45 of Jackson Browns Running on empty. After the record was done playing the automatic return did not kick in. Is this because I did not give it enough time ( I gave it at least 10 seconds ) or was it something to do with the record? ( this was the only time it has ever done this )
What's a turntable? No, seriously, why don't you try it again. If it still does it, the microswitch on the tonearm pivot that tells the return mechanism to do it's thing may be dirty or worn out. You'll have to open it up to get to it and if you don't work on things like that regularly it's not likely that you will be able to fix it. You can get turntables on eBay pretty cheap. There are a lot of them around and there is not much demand anymore. Kenwood isn't exactly a high end brand either. I have a Thorens that I got at a yard sale for $5.

i got an old Sansui Automatic Return FR-D3 turntable without speakers, just RCA cables.. now what?
what are the cables meant to plug into.. I heard you can hook it up to a receiver? I know nothing about turntables, I just want to listen to my records and I clearly need some speakers... and help.
Yes... You can hook it up to any receiver with an input marked "phono". You could buy a 2-channel stereo receiver and 2 speakers... or use a home theater receiver if you'd wish to add more speakers and have 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound for movies and games as well... Some modern receivers lack an input marked "phono". In this case, you'd need to add a separate phono preamp in order to use any standard line-level input (CD, tape, DVD, aux, etc...)
A decent separate phono preamp runs around $50.00. There are cheaper ones, but they can be noisy and have hum in the background... not the best sound quality... The TC-750 from Phonopreamps.com is a solid budget choice. Also, the ART DJ units. There's even one with a USB output...
About the most inexpensive solution would be something like this Sherwood stereo receiver that does have a built-in phono stage and "phono" input. Wouldn't require a separate phono preamp...
On a tight budget, I would probably match that with the best speakers I could afford from the Sony SS series. Very decent speakers on a tight budget... The dual woofer tower models are the best of the bunch and well worth the money if your budget allows and you have room for them (SS-F6000 and SS-F7000). The large 3-way bookshelves and the single-woofer tower models aren't so bad either if that's all you can swing. (SS-B3000 and SS-F5000).
