being symbolistic without using symbols?
there is an art project im staring but haveing troubles. we are instructed to draw about ourselves and our identity.
such as:
sexuality
religion
style
birth partens/adoption
work ethic
exc.
we are supposed to do all of this by being symbolistic (meaning what it means to US that others wont know by just looking at it). hard part is, we CANT use symbols!
a little about me:
-im NOT straight, meaning i might be a lesbian or bisexual. not sure yet. problem with that, my dad doesnt know so i dont want it to be obvious.
-im luthrean but not strong, still confused about my religion (if i believe)
-im an only child, sometimes feeling alone.
-im a hard worker, and have to be strong. i have had a lot to go through the past 2 years.
-im native american/white.
-my style can be considered punk rock...
if you have any ideas it will be GREATLY appreciated. pictures would be even better!

So what you mean is, you want to express those ideas, but you want to express them by being vague and not-obvious, meaning you won't use powerful symbols that are mainly known. Am I right?
Being symbolistic without using symbols, well that just sounds impossible. I like my explanation better.
You don't think you're straight. So, well, you can use the good 'ol phallic symbol. A big giant vertical line will do. Or just any sort of line. This represents-- the male reproductive organ! Than, you can do something like, break up the line, or put a barrier on top or in front of the line somehow.
I'll try to use a visual example... I read from a book about this guy's dream. He didn't know what it meant. He was chasing after this girl, and she was looking back and all, but she ran from him far, and then this big barrier shot through between him and the girl, blocking his view or cutting him off. He was homosexual.
Take it in an abstract way, is just what your teacher is saying I think.
Religion is like a circle. To say you are confused, you can use a blurred circle, or a circle that seems to have suffered some weatherment, and is not broken up. Or, maybe you can do something with an airport terminal...
... something like these ideas. (I think you'll be fine)
