Can someone help me with my physics problem due tomorrow?
A lazy susan is a rotatable tray (a turntable) placed on top of a dining table to aid in serving (reputedly invented by Thomas Jefferson for his daughter Susan who complained that she was usually served last).
Mischievous Joey likes to play with his family's lazy susan (this drives Mom crazy because it is an antique). He puts the salt shaker near the edge and tries to spin the tray at a speed so that the shaker just barely goes around without slipping off. Joey finds that the shaker just barely stays on when the turntable is making one complete turn every two seconds. Joey's older sister measures the mass of the shaker to be 74 grams. She also measures the radius of the turntable to be 0.2 m, and she is able to calculate that the speed of the shaker as it successfully goes around in a circle is 0.628 m/s.
(a)What is the magnitude of the horizontal part of the contact force on the shaker by the turntable?
(b) What is the magnitude of the vertical part of the contact force?
My Physics is a bit rusty, but I reckon:
(a). That will be the centripetal force.
I have just found it. Do you recognise this?
F = mv² / R
F = 0.074 kg * (0.628 m/s)² / 0.2 m
You can multiply that out.
(b). F = m * a
m = 0.074 kg, a (due to gravity) = 9.8 m/s²
F = 0.074 * 9.8

Elton John on antique turntable
USB Turntable to back up LP's. Do you like it?
Has anyone used the USB turntable from http://www.ion-audio.com/ittusb.php ? Do you like it? What have been your results? I'm wanting to backup some of my LP's and some antique LP's that I picked up at garage sales. (mostly 78's) Which I read you can do with their turntable and some software.
I was referring to all vinyl in general. (MOST people these days look at all vinyl as LP's...yes I KNOW that an LP is not a 45 or a 78...) Don't be a crotchety old nitpicking stick in the mud.
78's are NOT LPs and need a larger needle to play.
